It’s been several hours and five days since Tim texted me with the news that his doctors found a very large blood clot in his leg – the same leg that was shattered earlier this summer and required major surgery.
We knew this was a post-surgery risk, and he took all the usual precautions: elevating his leg, walking around frequently, doing heel-toe stretches, etc. We’re so surprised he developed a clot at all because he has a tendency to bruise very easily; in fact, we thought he might have a clotting-deficiency disorder.
And now this.
Deep vein thrombosis is scary. If a part of the clot breaks off and travels to his lungs, it could be fatal. My sister-in-law Jill lost her best friend earlier this year to a pulmonary embolism. The statistics are in our favor (especially now that he’s being treated with blood thinners), but I am still terrified. Like, I can’t sleep. I can’t really write about it without my chest tightening and feeling like I’m going to choke.
I need my Tim. There is nothing like a crisis to make you appreciate the mundane. Tonight at dinner I felt like I just never wanted to stop eating potato and leek soup together.
Here are Tim’s legs – one is quite swollen due to the clot preventing optimal venous return:
Tim thinks the swelling has actually gone down, so hopefully he is on the mend. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers and calls and texts – they mean so much.
In the meantime, I’m trying to take things one moment at a time. Luckily, there are a lot of good moments, like spontaneous snuggle / tickle-fight parties.

I love you, Laura! You and Tim are certainly in my prayers. We need to get together again and do some anti-anxiety activities. I'll call you. :)
My heavens - you have really been through the wringer lately! I will put Tim's name on the prayer roll at the temple and we'll keep him (and all of you) in our personal prayers too. Love you!
Laura, sorry to hear this. What a terrifying time for you guys. I'll pray for your.family. Call me if you ever want to talk... And please keep us updated.
Grrr! This is not good and definitely not needed right now...or ever really. I'll be thinking of you all and hope this is resolved for the better soon!
Oh, this is just so sweet. The hard truth is that none of us know the hour our number will be up. It's a good reminder to cling to the ones we love and the life we have like we might be in one of those sappy country songs. 'Cause it's true. Amen.
And please bless Tim's leg- go away clot, but not to the brain or lungs.
I'll be sending prayers and thoughts your way.
Yeah, the words "blood clot" are not my favorite, for obvious reasons. I'm just glad they caught it and can keep an eye on it. I sure wish they had known about Belinda's and had taken measures.
I'm sure Tim will be just fine. In the mean time, he will be in our prayers. He truly is a good guy, that husband of yours!
Oh my gosh, Laura! That is crazy! And scary! You are in my prayers as well!
