I'll push myself up through the dirt and shake my petals free
I'm resigned to being born and so resigned to bravery.

A week ago today, I did what I've been dreading almost constantly for the past 11 months: I returned to work.

Before I had a baby, I thought it would be an easy transition. Ha ha ha. I adore my baby more than the moon (and that's saying a lot), and it has taken a huge amount of trust, anguish, and surrendering of control to get to the point where it has been possible to say goodbye to Miss Squiggles for even a few hours.

Thankfully, my boss has been really great and is letting me work from home a couple days a week for the next couple months. More importantly, my mother-in-law has volunteered to take care of the baby while I'm away. I deliberately use the term, "take care of," because she adores the child and looks after with the same amount of concern I do. She sings to her, reads her stories, takes her for walks, rocks her to sleep, and comforts her when she cries (which is pretty rare, thankfully). And happily, my baby adores both her grandmothers.* It is such a relief to know that I don't have to worry about my baby while I'm away - when I come home, I find her smiling with her Nana.

We took advantage of Nana's generosity today again for three hours and had some "Laura and Tim" time. We rode our bikes along the south shore past Cohassett's mansions. It was over 90 degrees outside, but we had a great time and it was so nice to get out.
(Tim loves posing for photos so much.)
After the ride, we stopped at a little lobster shack at Nantasket beach.

The place was a bit of a dive, but it was the best lobster roll I've ever had, with only lemon and dill as condiments.

Hopefully we'll be able to get out and ride more often this summer; my bicycle is my second-favorite baby.

*My own mother has baby-hypnotizing powers - I've never seen Squiggles smile and laugh as much as with my mom.

Oh, she is so cute! I love that outfit (and the baby in it!). I'm delighted that things are working out with Tim's mom. I knew they were kindred spirits. The bike ride looked splendid and I'm glad you made it to Nantucket!

I know how much it means to have someone caring for your kids who really do "care", so that is so wonderful that you have someone who fits the bill! It makes having to leave them a little less bitter! That bike ride looks like it was a fabulous time! How fun!

More than the moon?!? That is saying a lot. I think you should make a mixed CD about Squiggles.

I also have a hard time leaving my kids with anyone, so you should consider it an honor that we allow you to watch them occasionally. ;)

The next best thing to Mom and Dad is Grandma. So glad Tim's mom is around. That's a blessing. Good luck with work.

P.S. That baby is getting cuter and cuter!

Just when I think that Squiggles (great nickname by the way) can't get any cuter, you post another photo of her. :)

You are so lucky to live by great expanses of water. Please enjoy it a little bit extra for me. Thanks.

I have to agree with Marsha--cuter than I even thought!! She is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute. And I have to say, her mama is looking a little more well endowed than when I saw her last :-) Hope your transition goes well--I'm glad someone is looking after you.

As much as I love leaving my boys with a teeny bopper, (not at all) , I am never more at ease than when I leave them with a Grandma. I think they're the only other people on Earth who really and truly love your babies as much as you do. She will be just fine and the bonding will be so beneficial for her.

You are looking so good and that lobster roll made my mouth water. Also, Tim really does love to pose for photos. I've noticed this about him.

I can imagine that would be VERY hard. But between what I've heard from Tim and now what I've read from you - it sounds like BU is a pretty great institution. I know a corporation wouldn't allow such liberties and flexibility (hence, why I am making all provisions to exit the corporate scene so when my day comes I will have more liberties and flexibilities too).

Little Miss Squiggles looks ADORABLE in that pink outfit!!! I love the sun-hat that matches it! But even more that that I love Baby Squiggles' smiles. She's smiling in most photos so I might just start to call her Baby Smiles. :)
